A brief note on copyright, and avoiding plagiarism

Copyright laws protect the creative works of writers, scholars, and anyone who produces media for the eyes (and ears) of others—yourself included. It is important to recognize that laws exist for everyone, and we should all take care when we do our research to respect the laws as well as the efforts and intellectual property of others.

Plagiarism is an intellectual crime against copyright—using another person’s written material without proper acknowledgement of that source. To avoid plagiarism—whether deliberate or innocent—keep detailed notes, leave yourself plenty of time to write and revise, and be sure to:
