Revisit last year's stirring pool

A rules refresher

Yes! The NCAA tournament pool will be held via the web again this year. The first games are Thursday afternoon, March 15; the deadline for first-round entries is noon, Thursday. Please note that we refuse to acknowledge Tuesday night's so-called "play-in" game created by the NCAA to fill the 64th slot.

The pool entry form is now available. Just fill out the form and hit the "Submit" button. You can go to the entry form page in order to print it out for further study, then return later to submit your entry. Or, you may wish to acquire the printable bracket available from ESPN.

Watch this space for results as they become available. Because I will be out of town for the first and second rounds with uncertain web access, I cannot guarantee how often results will be updated. Check in to see.

The form for the remaining games will be available Sunday night, March 18 or Monday March 19. Watch this space.

Happy pooling, Bruce Moon (email comments)

Rules

1. As always, the more the merrier. Newcomers are always welcome. Multiple entries are encouraged, but please use different names to avoid confusion. Deceased pets are especially welcome.

2. The pool is conducted in two stages. In the first, one must predict the first weekend's games (rounds 1 and 2) plus, as bonus picks, the advance winners of the four regionals. The second stage, the entries for which are due Thursday, March 22, covers the remainder of the tournament. Second stage entries are not bound by first stage picks.

3. Entry fee is $2.00, which can be left for Bruce Moon in a variety of ways - under his door in Maginnes Hall (208), in the International Relations office (Maginnes 207), or collected by designated pool officials in regional offices. The single entry fee covers both stages.

4. The winner is determined by total points. Points are earned for correct picks as follows:

Round 1            1 point
Round 2            2 points
Regional bonus  5 points

Regional semis   4 points
Regional finals    4 points
Final four           6 points

5. The first-place finisher wins 75% of the pool. The second place finisher wins 25%. The entry with the highest number of correct upsets and the highest percentage of correct upset picks earns the respect and admiration of everyone.
