Message from the Director

The Loewy Institute at Lehigh University is committed to advancing materials-based research and education. Researchers operating in both Lehigh and other various collaborating laboratories around the world take a cross-disciplinary approach to developing, understanding and controlling techniques for forming and processing various materials. Our goal is to constantly explore new processes, further developing our knowledge in order to improve the forming of various materials through process engineering optimization, physical and numerical modeling as well as materials characterization. Our research interest expands well beyond traditional processes such as metal forming, casting or machining. We are also actively involved in additive manufacturing research, having begun the program years ago when it was still referred to as rapid prototyping.

In many ways, the Loewy Institute builds upon the success of Lehigh's longstanding Institute for Metal Forming (IMF). The IMF has been part of the core fabric of the materials science and manufacturing community at Lehigh since 1970, and the Loewy Family Foundation has been there to support us every step of the way. We are eternally grateful for their support as well as their significant commitment to materials and materials processing research and education toward solving society's ever-changing grand challenges. IMF is comprised of researchers from various Lehigh colleges and departments that have been working together on mutual projects for decades.
