Research Spotlights
Past IMI-NFG Research Exchange (RE) Participants
Alfonso Pedone:
Thanks to the partial support of the IMI-NFG Research Exchange Grant. I spent three months in 2006 at Alfred University under the supervision of Professor Alastair N. Cormack.
This research experience in Alfred revealed to be very productive. In fact, I gained invaluable knowledge on structure and physical properties of glasses from experts in the field. During the three months in Alfred University, I had the opportunity to optimize computational procedures to study structure, transport and elastic properties of silicate glasses. These procedures have been applied to study the effect of the replacement of MgO for CaO in soda-lime glasses.
Currently, I devised new algorithms to study fracture mechanisms in glasses and I focused on the silica glass and soda lime glasses.
Thanks to this research exchange experience, I was also able to learn more about the US culture. I was able to meet a lot of nice and very helpful people both in the University and the community. I really enjoyed my visit in the States and I hope to come back in the future.
