I typically supervise half a dozen or so masters students, one or two Ph.D. students, but the students who work with me find they have to think a lot on their own. I'm enamored with the Socratic technique ... answering a question with a question probing and causing people to answer their own questions. What students get is a lot of probing. I just point them in a direction, and say "well did you read this, or did you consider that, and when you did, what do you think of it?"
