This is the "Flame of Liberty" monument, erected years ago to symbolize French-American friendship.  It is not there in honor of Pricess Diana, but people still leave flowers and remembrances in front of it.  Paris prefers that people visit the official Diana memorial garden in Marais.  You can ask for that all you want, but seven years later, people are still coming here.
