Outside the Hotel Des Invalides. We thought the gardens here were as nicely manicured as Versailles'. Very pretty, even on a gray day. And obviously there is the Eiffel Tower in the background. Oh, to have that view from your apartment! And I would guess that everyone has the same spectacular view. No skyscrapers to block it. Our excellent Illuminations tour guide, Pierre, told us that city planners forbade any building to be over eight stories tall, which gives you a nice, uniform design. It also means that space is at a premium. According to some "for rent" signs, a one-bedroom apartment can run between $1,500-$2,000. Like NYC, you pay dearly for location.
