CURRENT RESEARCH AREAS and Publications
Research into the relations
between the structure and physical properties of solids, their surface properties,
and their ability to guide chemical reactions along specific pathways. Solid
state chemistry and catalysis phenomena are investigated by modern means of
electron and optical spectroscopies and electron microscopy involving
microdiffraction and X-ray microanalysis. Optoelectronics for flexible displays. OLEDs and PLEDs.
Surface science of atomic and molecular
overlayers is being pursued using high
energy and angle resolution X-ray and UV photoelectron spectroscopy (HR
X(U)PS), electron energy loss spectroscopy (HR EELS), low energy electron
diffraction (LEED), temperature programmed desorption (TPD), and isotope
methods.
Quantum chemical
state-of-the-art studies are carried out
of the reaction pathways and the structure of surface
complexes using gradient semi-empirical and ab initio methods.

Intrazeolitic
transition metal ion complexes with
organic molecules are being investigated by spectroscopic, structural, and
theoretical methods. Dioxygen, olefin, and nitrogen oxide complexes have been
synthesized, theoretical ligand field theory thereof developed, and Jahn-Teller
effect with spin-orbit coupling as well as excitation energy transfer are being
studied.
Several current projects involve the synthesis
of alcohols and ethers from carbon monoxide and hydrogen catalyzed by
copper, transition metals, oxides, sulfides and solid acids. The fundamental
aspect of this research focuses on the determination of the relation between the
structure and electronic state of the catalysts and their selectivity to a
given product, the control of the C-C, C-O, C-H, and C-N bond formation.
Activation of small molecules for specific reactions, such as of methane to
formaldehyde, methanol and higher alcohols, is being studied experimentally and
theoretically. The catalysts involve doubly doped oxides, zeolites and metals,
both in single crystal form and in ultradispersed form. The practical
significance of this research rests in our ability to design catalysts for
novel synthesis of monomers, energy chemicals, and specialty chemicals. The
research team working on the project involves physical chemists, organic
chemists, chemical engineers, and physicists.
