Course Format / Meetings

This is a self paced, Web based course. Normally you should be able to learn the material using the web site and your textbooks.  However there are these additional interactions that we think are very important in ensuring a quality learning:

a)      E-mail communications.  We expect you to check your LEHIGH e-mail at least once a day.  It is important that you forward your Lehigh mail to your favorite address if you prefer to check only one familiar e-mail.   In order to do this connect to:  https://nsweb.cc.lehigh.edu/auth-cgi-bin/account

b)      Phone and/or audio communications.  You must locate the Staff Information page of the course web site and see the phone numbers of your instructor, teaching assistant, technical support person, etc.

c)      Proctored tests.  These are going to be held twice: once in the middle of the course and the other as final examinations. The location of these exams will be decided and arranged on one to one basis.  We would love to see you on our beautiful campus for a day or so if at all possible.

d)      Web based group discussions.  Details will be announced during the course.

 Tests

After the first five units, you must take two proctored tests.

The first one is a programming exam: you will be assigned a particular problem and you will be asked to write a program for it, compile it, run it and obtain the requested results.  This will be done while you are sitting in front of  a computer and it will last about one hour.

The second test is a written test:  You will be asked to answer four or five questions using only paper, pencil, your calculator and a hint sheet we will be providing.

 Assignments

During the course you will work on 10 homework assignments (numbered 0-9) and 10 programming assignments (numbered 1-10). Detailed description of the assignments and their due dates can be found on the course outline and the associated links.  Homework and programming assignments must contain near the top of the first page the following "Engineering 1 box":

Your name and user id

Date

Assignment name and number

Instructor's name

We try to encourage individuality and we would like to limit our rules to a minimum, however the above box is a 30 year old tradition in this course and it is cherished by many people involved in Engineering 1. Please continue using it.

a) Homework

After a couple of weeks (by the time you submit hw0) you should become familiar with a word processor of your choice. You are kindly requested to prepare your homework using a word processor. You must submit a   copy in your student drop box ( see the Student Tools link in your Course Info site).

b) Programming Assignments

These assignments also will  be submitted using your student drop box.  These files will consist of the source code files generated by the text editor of your software.  Occasionally you may be asked to submit a data file ( output and/or input).  A suggested method for naming  these files is:

xxxxpa#.ext

where

xxxx is your Lehigh University computer user id

# is the number of the assignment

ext is an appropriate extension

such as

cpp for C++ language files

txt for text files

etc.

Documented Disabilities

Students with documented disabilities will be accommodated according to the suggestions of the director of Disability Support Services. Students must:
a) Provide the director of DSS with documentation of a diagnosed disability that is no more than three years old. The materials must be submitted in a timely manner in order for the director to review the materials and coordinate any accommodations.
b) Provide their instructor with at least seven (7) days notification prior to the need for accommodations.

).

 Academic Integrity

You are encouraged to discuss the assignments with one another, your friends, and with the instructors and graders of the course. Indeed, this may be the most effective method of learning. You may share concepts, approaches and strategies for producing a solution. However all work submitted in your name must be your own and only your own. COPYING OTHER PEOPLE'S WORK OR ALLOWING OTHERS TO COPY YOUR WORK IS COUNTER PRODUCTIVE AND SENSELESS AND IT IS HENCE FORBIDDEN. Student conduct during tests and exams must also adhere to University rules. Unauthorized use of material will be dealt with severely.

For information and support consult Academic Integrity on the Lehigh main web site. Also keep in mind the Academic Integrity statement produced by the Student Senate:

We, the Lehigh University Student Senate, as the standing representative body of all undergraduates, reaffirm the duty and obligation of students to meet and uphold the highest principles and values of personal, moral and ethical conduct. As partners in our educational community, both students and faculty share the responsibility for promoting and helping to ensure an environment of academic integrity. As such, each student is expected to complete all academic course work in accordance to the standards set forth by the faculty and in compliance with the University's Code of Conduct.
