Founded in March 2003, Lehigh University's own South Mountain Mariachi is among the newest music organizations on campus and as far as we are aware is the only Mariachi group affiliated with a college or university in the entire region. Mariachi Montaña del Sur is already in demand for folk and internationally-oriented functions across the University and throughout the area.
Mariachi Montaña del Sur performs an expanding range of both traditional and modern mariachi repertoire: corridos, jarabes, pasodobles, polkas, rancheras, sones huastecos, sones jaliscienses, sones michoacanos and valses. Like most folk music, Mariachi expresses everyday passions of love and joy, death and politics, folk heros and legends.

Join us in celebrating and learning about the unique style and techniques of this traditional folk music of first rural and later urban Mexico. Most group members also perform with the Lehigh University Philharmonic Orchestra, but the group is open to anyone. We invite you to experience with us this integral and ever vibrant part of Mexican culture and history.
