Glaciers feed Lago Argentino (largest in Argentina) and draw tourists to the town of El Calafate

Maps of the region and a sign indicating a "frontier" aspect of El Calafate
A wetland attracts birds next to the town of El Calafate, but Lago
Argentino's shores are elsewhere barren from the harsh climate
The "Upsala Explorer" takes visitors to Estancia Cristina for food,
history and excursions. Trip starts with rainbow & rain, ends with sun.
A large iceberg hints of approaching Upsala Glacier; blue ice contrasts with blue-green water (latter caused when light is scattered upward by fine particles of "glacial flour").
This "monster" RV carries tourists across a river & up a steep mountain
trail to view fossils and Glacier Upsala.
Approaching Glacier Perito Moreno from Brazo Rico (see map). Water level rises
here when the terminus of the glacier blocks the canal (last happened in 1988).
Marine fossils and glacier-polished rocks at 500 meters above sea level
Perito Moreno from our boat; note "tunnel" formed by meltwater.
Upsala Glacier, largest on the Argentine side,
and Lago Guillermo (formed as Upsala retreated)
Perito Moreno from a lookout platform;
compare colors of sky, ice, and water.
