Places we'd rather be ...
In 1995 Dave and I stayed at the Luxor Hotel and Casino, which is really
quite a marvel. The Luxor is the third largest hotel in the world
and a nightmare to make your way around because of its size. There are
over 4,400 rooms and it's interesting trying to get to yours, even knowing
the floor and room number. There are no vertically-running elevators
here; instead, the hotel has "inclinators" that carry you up diagonally.
The first challenge is finding the inclinator that will take you to your
side of the hotel, and the next is standing up straight in the car while
you're travelling sideways. Another interesting feature is the light
beam that radiates from the top of the pyramid. It's the brightest
beam in the world, and you could read a newspaper 10 miles in space by
its light!
