Research and Scholarship

Dr. Ricles conducts experimental and analytical research on innovative seismic-resistant steel structures; on composite steel-concrete structures; on structural steel connections; on advanced simulation methods, including real-time hybrid simulation for dynamic loading; and on the rehabilitation and assessment of damaged and deteriorated buildings and offshore structures. He has been principal or co-principal investigator for more than 32 research projects with budgets exceeding $50,000, and for 5 large-scale multi-investigator research programs with budgets exceeding $1 million. He is co-author of more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 234 conference and workshop proceedings papers and technical reports.

Dr. Ricles is a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Awardee (1991-1996), NASA Research Fellowship Awardee (1990-1991) American Institute of Steel Construction National Fellow, (1987), and the winner of eight awards for Lincoln Arc Welding Recognition of Outstanding Achievement in Arc Welded Design (1987-2003).

Teaching and Service

Dr. Ricles teaches courses in Structural Dynamics, Structural Reliability, Linear and Non-linear Structural Analysis, and Stability and Design of Steel Structures. He has supervised or co-supervised more than 25 completed M.S. student theses and 15 completed Ph.D. student dissertations. Some of these former Ph.D. students are now faculty members at University of Illinois, Princeton University, and Purdue University in the US, as well as at several universities overseas.
