Research and Scholarship

Dr. Naito’s structural engineering research encompasses the behavior and design of structures; the blast-resistant design of structures; the design of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures; and innovative structural materials and systems. In particular his work focuses upon the evaluation of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures subjected to extreme events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and intentional blast demands.

Dr. Naito has written extensively on how precast concrete performs in seismic and blast-resistant designs. In 2008, his work earned him the Young Educator Achievement Award from the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI).

Teaching and Service

Dr. Naito currently serves as the associate chair of the department of civil and environmental engineering and teaches courses in Prestressed Concrete, Behavior and Design of Blast Resistant Structures, and Civil Engineering Materials.

Dr. Naito is also the chair of the PCI Blast Resistance and Structural Integrity Committee and an associate editor of the ASCE Bridge Journal. He is a licensed professional engineer in Pennsylvania and California.
