Interesting article on honor killings in Pakistan
Here is an article by Anwar Syed in Pakistan's Dawn, on honor killings.
It is interesting in part for the concepts from the Pakhtun tribal culture in northwest Pakistan (and Afghanistan). "Melmastia" and "nanawati" are words I hadn't come across before. But I find his conclusion troubling: Syed doesn't think greater legal enforcement is what is needed to stop the honor killings. Instead, what is needed is, alas, a cultural change -- men have to stop thinking of women as property. But how exactly is this supposed to occur?
It's yet another case where stronger central government authority could make a big difference.
