Lester R. Bittel was born in 1918, and was graduated from Lehigh University
in 1940 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He worked in industry for 30
years as an engineer, plant manager and training director. As an employee of
McGraw-Hill he managed several trade publications and was director of information
systems. At James Madison University he was Professor of Management, and Director
of the Center for Supervisory Research, and was designated a Virginia Eminent
Scholar. He is the author of about 50 books, and is an internationally recognized
authority on management and supervision.
The material in this collection includes some typescripts, much correspondence
regarding the planning, development, publication and marketing of various publications,
copies of almost 1000 book reviews done for McGraw-Hill, and material relating
to speeches and presentations he has made. Also included is a small amount of
personal correspondence, royalty statements from McGraw-Hill, a family genealogy,
and some Lehigh memorabilia. Other names (includes co-authors and persons who
"work for hire") represented are: Muriel Albers Bittel (LRB's wife), Ronald
