My title changed over the decades: variously, Systems Programmer, Systems Analyst or Senior Analyst. And even though the word Computer never appeared in those titles the essence of my job was simply to program computers.

When I arrived as an undergrad the state of the art was TTYs, punched cards and line printer paper. Programmers splayed lengths of printer output on a table and used colorful felt-tip pens to annotate the program listing (and perhaps their shirt pocket as well).
