Unit #0 Introduction

UNIX : a different operating system

In Engineering1 we will be using the windows XP operating system.  However, we think there is an advantage in learning some of the basic unix commands. In ME 413 – Numerical Methods – we must learn how to work in the Unix system.

Students and faculty at Lehigh use several unix workstations for tasks like web page building, computationally intensive applications, computer aided design etc. If you feel that you can manage to read the material given below on your own (it is not that hard) and start working right away on all Lehigh Systems available to you, please go ahead.  We can provide some assistance by answering specific questions you might have. Otherwise you can wait until later.

We list three sources of information about unix ( and the popular unix text editor EMACS ) .

a)   SETUP your NEW LEHIGH ACCOUNT

b)      Short Unix Notes

c)      Using your PC to connect to Work Stations
